Natural hair in the workplace has often been an unspoken hot-topic in professional workplaces. Black women were often indirectly told to straighten their hair in order to appear “more presentable.” Decades later, young women entering the workforce are allowed to embrace their natural hair and experiment with styles other than bone-straight perms. Here are the experiences of two millennial women, one in a creative field and one in a traditionally professional environment, regarding the ways they wear their hair.

Title & Company: Application Manager & Designer at A Cultivated Mindset

How do you normally style your hair?

It’s always different, buns to weave. It just depends.

Why do you choose to wear your hair this way?

I like changing up my look and having fun with it, I’m young and still developing “my look.”

Describe your office dress code and work environment.

Very casual and laid back, sometimes we meet with clients, but a lot of our work is digital so we don’t have to get dressed up all the time.

Has anyone in the workplace ever commented on your hair (outside of compliments)?

Nope! Everyone is pretty understanding.

Do you feel any pressure to wear your hair in a certain way?

Sometimes, not at work but I have in other circumstances. Some people don’t understand the culture and how diverse black hair can be.

What do you love about your hair?

The versatility! My hair can do whatever I want it to.
